Selected Bibliography

Every source in this book is cited in full at the endnote where it first appears; this bibliography gathers the principal works, with author names in surname-first order. Publisher and year for the books and reports have been verified against library and publisher records; full details for periodicals, legal cases, and broadcasts sit at the relevant endnote. Certain primary artifacts discussed in the text — notably the forged Protocols of the Elders of Zion* — are documented, with the context that they are forgeries or propaganda, at their endnotes rather than listed here as sources.*

Further Reading — The Craft of Covert Communication

The chapter on deniable communication (Chapter Forty-One) rests on the sources at its own endnotes. The works below are not cited in the text; they are the standard literature for a reader who wants to understand how hidden communication actually works, and each has been verified against publisher and library records. One distinction the chapter turns on is worth repeating here: almost all documented covert communication is cooperative — a message sent to a witting recipient who already holds the key — which is a different thing from a message aimed at an unwitting target. These are histories of the former.

A wider reading map than the works cited above, assembled from a survey of each layer’s authoritative literature.
